Mattie: A Thoroughbred saved from slaughter

Picture
Mantancera has an interesting pedegree from famous horses. Anybody hear of Seattle Slew? Her great great grandfather on her mothers side. And to think she was on the auction block being bid on for slaughter. She was neglected, abused and moved around so many times. NEVER, EVER AGAIN!!! ♥ We have lovingly changed her name to Mattie. This is the condition she was in when first took her in.

Mattie is doing so great. She was 1050 pounds when we got her and today 7-4-2011, she is at 1175 pounds in just over a month. Whenever I approach she walks right up to me. I think she knows that she finally met a trustworthy and kind human. I am humbled and honored to be in her presence.

Glorious Lady (Glory) and Mattie are inseparable. Mattie was so terrified when we brought her home but her terror melted away as soon as she met our Glory. Mattie and Glory will never, ever be separated. Friends forever :-)

About The Humans That Saved My Life

I am Ruby, a horse.
This is my story about the humans that saved my life and the lives of so many others like me.
When I was only 7 my previous humans didn't care about me. They would leave me tied up for weeks without food and water. In the sweltering Florida sun and heat and torrential rains I hoped that a human would love me and take away the pains of my  hunger and thirst. One day a man and a woman took me to their home. I was very sick and for three days I could not stand from the agony of colic. They would take turns holding my head in their laps despite the heat, thunder and downpours. They would cry and kiss me and caress my head and I knew that they were different. Finally I had a reason to live. My humans tried everything. A vet couldn't help and wanted to end my suffering. On the third day these humans heard of an old time remedy that worked. I was able to get up and my new humans gave me a very large yard to run and play in. I was broken and they made me whole again.
Over the years my human lady would brush me, feed me and give me water. She showed me so much love and I needed to show her my gratitude. My lady has epilepsy and her seizures would strike almost every day. After what she did for me I felt so helpless. One day I started to kiss her all over her face to show her how much I loved her. My humans anguished face began to change and her seizures mysteriously subsided. I had found my destiny and that was to take care of the human that so selfishly saved my life.
The man human showed me that not all of mankind are cruel and mean. He would very patiently trim and clean my hooves, despite my kicking him several times at first. My fear of him gradually changed from terror to gratitude for he and my lady human were the first humans to show me so much care. My man built me a barn, provided me with food and made sure I had a pasture I could play in and shade from the heat. The man would care for me when I was sick. Very gently he would give me shots to make me well. This human man has given me so much love over the past 23 years, and I hope that I have returned his unselfish sacrifices for me. I love my humans and I know that they love me.
Over the years my humans took in so many animals like me. They were all abandoned, abused or neglected. My humans took care of these castoff critters and never questioned if it was the right thing to do. Most of the animals they took in lived happy and full lives, thanks to my humans. Some were too far gone but my humans gave their last days on this earth as much comfort and love that was humanely possible.
All of the animals that my humans took in became my friends. Me, my humans and all of the other animals knew that we belonged together. We were all cared for and loved without hesitation or question.
